~The summer holidays for children, pupils and students is a chance to unwind and recover from another academic year. It’s an opportunity to catch up with friends and family and possibly take a vacation abroad.
For some, however, they could still be working.

If you’re a creative individual you may find the thought of doing nothing boring and would much rather challenge your intellect. This concept applied to UCLAN’s third year fine art students who spent their summer break developing a variety of new visual artworks.

The above has culminated in an exhibition ‘This is all I Had’. It is running now until Tuesday October 9th 2018. It begins each day at 9am and concludes at 5pm, taking place at the Hanover Building UCLAN.

In addition, assistant curators Kerry Tenby and Beth Wise played their part in the exhibition too as they explain,

Kerry, “My work continues to explore and reflect upon individual experience. Trying to find meaning and understanding of societal constructs, such as gender, sexuality and identity. Intimacy and affection play an important role in comprehending these ideas. As a result of all these musings, I create poetic compositions of objects that feel intimate, personal and relatable”.

Kerry also bases her work on repetitiveness and the ability to reuse and recycle cut outs and waste moulds to create the next work, shapes within shapes and finding new works from those internal spaces.

Beth, “My work explores the differences between soft and gentle materials like wool, and the more solid and industrial sculpting properties of concrete. I often deal with the process of balancing heavy pieces onto thin structures, trying to find a shape that works. I intertwine and combine these things to create mini explorations that push the boundaries of fragile sculpture.”

Throughout her degree, Beth has  found inspiration and meaning in concrete poetry. Her  work acts as an attempt to visually represent language through shape, line and material.

Through repetitive experimentation of materials and material process, both artists create work which focuses on specific shapes, textures, colours and consideration to tactility to achieve visual representations of individual experience.

Kerry and Beth have recently been selected by UK YA (UK Young Artists) to present work at Nottingham City Takeover 2019.

This Is All I Had acts as a visual pause for each artists’ individual development as they continue into their final year of study.
