Fabrications Event 7-30th September 2017

Sep, 6 2017

~The first of things can often be a challenging yet exciting experience. As parents, watching a baby’s first steps was a monumental time. Seeing a child grow through school and peers can bring uncertainty and difficulties for parents. Yet when they reach mid teens they are presented with choices, decisions about courses and career development. Perhaps some teens may want an athletic job. Others may prefer more academic learning such as being a student doctor. There are those however, that may lean towards the arts and creativity and the following information may be of valuable use to them or for mature adults who are already involved ….

Taking place from 7th - 30th September 2017 is ‘Fabrications’ , the UK’s very first festival that celebrates and explores textiles and the textile industry through the eyes of artists. Taking place in galleries, museums and former textile mills across Blackburn, Hyndburn, Burnley and Pendle.

On the final weekend of the festival ‘Fabrications Exchange’ is collaborating with Creative Lancashire to explore the broader themes of Skills, Migration and Heritage through a series of panel conversations with (and for) industry and professional textiles practitioners.

These panel of  experts comprise of industrialists, academics and textile designers. The above themes will be covered in more depth and will also give greater insight into the ways textiles industry, skills and material still remain parts of our lives and its role/influence on global markets.

Speakers include:
Sarah Lloyd - Panaz
Simon Brindle - UCLAN Fashion
Steve Kay - NW Texnet

Full line-up to be confirmed.

Following the discussion comes a film which captures the very people that are woven together by the global textile industry. It  reveals a first hand look at the sharp end of fast fashion.  ‘World Factory’ is an extraordinary piece of film with a moving soundtrack. The now - derelict Brierfield Mill will play host to the screening of the film.  Transportation to and from Brierfield Mill will be provided.

Throughout the lunch break there is a valuable opportunity to visit exhibits and view works created by some of the speakers other designers, artists, manufacturers and organisations.
