Creative Outlooks - A Nostalgic Look At The Futuristic Terminator Movies

Just over 40 years ago a science fiction made its debut at cinemas. It was before Back to the Future, Bill and Ted and the comical Hot Tub Time Machine. No, this was a serious time travel film, born a futuristic series of cyborgs known as Terminators.

The following film is the 1984 trailer -

You can see the basic special effects but this was vastly improved when the sequel came along in 1991 – Terminator 2 – Judgement Day. It gave Arnold Schwarzenegger a second bite of the apple and he really shone in the second instalment of the franchise.

The concept of artificial intelligence derived in the first film is closer to reality in the present day so director James Cameron had an accurate prophetic vision of the future with the 1984 film.

Some of the running themes throughout the films are loosely based on Greek Mythology given your fate cannot be cheated and the more you try to escape the more entangled you will become.

There are some deep philosophical questions the films make you consider - Why does the terminator look like one of us? Why can he sound like any of us? Why can T-1000 become any of us? Genre conventions aside, it is because the terminator symbolically represents all of us.

Yes, The Terminator movies are not for the faint hearted. Designed to entertain and fascinate jumping back and forward in time and using robots to protect and destroy humanity. Good versus evil in an ongoing fight for the family line and what seriously matters in life.

Terminator 2 followed the next series of films –

  • Terminator 3 – Rise of the Machines – 2003
  • Terminator Salvation – 2009
  • Terminator  Genisys  - 2015
  • Terminator – Dark Fate – 2019

There is also Terminator – The Sarah Connor Chronicles Series – 2008 -2009 and Terminator Zero – 2024 – the animated series on Netflix.

Unlike the previous Terminator films where Arnie is captured saying his classic line – ‘I’ll be back’ –Director James Cameron has confirmed he won’t be in the following statement –

"I can safely say [Schwarzenegger] won't be [in it]. It's time for a new generation of characters. I insisted Arnold had to be involved in 'Terminator: Dark Fate,' and it was a great finish to him playing the T-800. There needs to be a broader interpretation of Terminator and the idea of a time war and superintelligence. I want to do new stuff that people aren't imagining."

So unfortunately we have to say ‘Hasta La Vista’ to Arnie staging a comeback for his ultimate role as the futuristic Terminator in the next instalment. One thing the films continue to do though is question our trust in both humans and robots. Who is genuine? Who is fake? With a timeline more complicated than ever before will they now play an ever bigger part considering technology is taking  over our lives more than we can imagine…….
