The Creative Entrepreneur - Andy Warhol - October 2026
Oct, 1 2026
Next February 2027 marks 40 years since we lost one of the greatest creative entrepreneurs to grace this earth. He was born August 6th 1928 – Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania U.S. and his career spanned the years 1949 – 1987. To his parents his was Andrew Warhola Jr. but to his greatest admirers he was known as Andy Warhol.
Take a look at this 5 minute 5 second film – Andy Warhol’s Factory- Everything you want to know –
The film touched on pop art and although this was a strong movement in the early 1950s, in America it was given its greatest impetus during the 1960s. Mostly because of a combined creative force of James Rosenquist’s billboard – derived painting and Andy Warhol’s repeated Campbell’s soup cans. This was identified at the time as incredible steps towards art that is socially to the point signalling early critical recognition of pop art’s challenge to abstract expressionism and its embrace of mass culture.
The ideology surrounding pop art was officially introduced in December 1962, the occasion was a ‘Symposium on Pop Art’ organised by the Museum of Modern Art. Two years later in 1964 a critic from The Observer referred Andy Warhol as the ‘innovator of pop art’ and has since become the central figure of the movement.
He was able to go beyond the visual style to create a cultural phenomenon in which he blended art, celebrity and commerce through his Factory studio and public persona. Even before he made a name for himself with Pop Art, he established himself as a commercial illustrator, doing advertisements, book and record covers.
As mentioned in the film he transformed icons of the time such as Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley from mass media images to bold, serialized works that examined fame and consumer culture. Warhol later influenced and mentored a new generation of pop artists in the 1980s, including Keith Haring and Kenny Scharf.
Now almost 40 years since his death, fans of his work still talk about him and refer to him as one of the greatest creative entrepreneurs of the time. What makes his story so compelling is that he continues to influence modern artists today, people like Lady Ga Ga, U2 and The Dandy Warhols.
If you’re a British citizen a trip to the states could be expensive but if you save up over time you could visit The Andy Warhol museum – Pittsburgh – America. It’s a fascinating exhibition of his most classic works and you’ll discover why so many artists still find him something of an enigma to the present day –
In March 1980, Warhol released his memoir POPism – The Warhol ‘60s, a retrospective account of his 1960s career and the cultural environment of the Factory. In a single year he also exhibited ‘Ten Portraits of Jews of the Twentieth Century’ and co- founded the New York Academy of Art, an institution dedicated to restoring traditional approached to artistic training.
Seven years later he reached his ultimately death. A memorial service was held in Manhattan on April 1st 1987. A series of celebrities came and showed their respect to a man who had a short life but left an incredible legacy that is imprinted into the mind of young people as they embark on a career in the arts. He continues to inspire people from the world of music and art and has played on indelible part on popular culture that has placed him into the art history books forever.
