Cycle Recycle Scheme empowers people to look after their bike

As a registered charity  ‘Active Lancashire’ seeks the needs of the interest of others and succeeds in ways to motivate people by helping them move forward in their lives. 

 

Recently it had created the  ‘More Positive Together’ project and as part of this group comes The Cycle Recycle Scheme. This pro-active scheme sees a number of bikes collected from waste sites and once given a complete makeover they are suitable for riding. 

 

The next stage is handled by delivery partners which host bike workshops across the County for the benefit of inactive, unemployed Lancashire residents who can attend workshops to maintain a bike and take it home for free with them at the end.

 

To make this a success funding is required and, so, both Lancashire County Council’s (LCC) Sustainable Transport Fund and the National Lottery have provided sufficient funds to keep the project running for the foreseeable future. 

 

Local businesses who deliver Cycle Maintenance Workshops will also benefit from essential funds that will provide further opportunities for participants who have come through the scheme through volunteering.

 

The funding from The National Lottery marks it’s first foray within the ‘Awards for All’ scheme. The scheme came about during the height of this years pandemic with it’s overall aim to fund projects and organisations that are helping communities through COVID-19 and allows for Cycle Recycle to develop a safe delivery of cycle workshops that comply with government guidelines.

 

This financial boost will create a digital platform which will provide greater opportunities for Lancashire residents to engage in the scheme, improving overall health and wellbeing, whilst also encouraging people back into employment using their sustainable mode of transport.

 

The figures show that since June 2018 over 1,200 bikes have been  recycled and over 400 participants have  engaged.

 

Despite all this good news the UK is still gripped in fear by the current National Lockdown and so all workshops are suspended until further notice. Active Lancashire however continue to support communities in accessing transport through the cycle scheme by linking residents with these three  delivery partners:-
