~Four years ago white artists took the lead in securing a place at The Turner Prize. Yet unbeknown to the organisers a black woman had been cultivating her craft since the 1980’s.

It was only in 2017 that Professor Lubaina Himid CBE became the first black woman to win the Turner Prize.

Another black British artist was positioning her roots firmly in the UK. Jackie Kay is a Scottish poet and novelist. Born in Edinburgh in 1961, Jackie had a Scottish mother and Nigerian father. Adopted as a baby by a white Scottish couple, Jackie grew up with Celtic roots yet she will always have the black origin inherited by her biological father.

Jackie specialises in creative writing and is Professor at Newcastle University as well as being a national poet laureate of Scotland, The Scots Makar. In addition, Jackie is the chancellor of the University of Salford.

To celebrate the achievements of these forward thinking individuals an event has been organised for these two leading females to  discuss their work.

‘In Conversation with Lubaina Himid CBE and Jackie Kay’ take place this Thursday 16th January at UCLAN’S Harrington Social Space, Harrington Building, Preston Campus. It is scheduled to run for a three hour duration from 6pm -9pm.

The event will be compered by UCLAN graduate and Hayward Gallery Senior Curator, Dr Zoe Whitley. Both Lubaina and Jackie will discuss in depth the connections between black art and literature and highlight the contexts in which black women have made their work.

There will be an opportunity to interact with attendees and refreshments will be available at the conclusion of the evening in Harrington Social Space. Parking is available on Whitendale Car Park, Adelphi Street, PR1 7DR
