UCLAN - December Graduation - Reflection And Review - 2019
Dec, 13 2019
~Ah, graduation day. The moment your son or daughter dons their cap and gowns as they progress into the career they’ve studied for over several years.
But it’s not just the students that receive top accolades. Those that have specialised in their field of work throughout their life are to be congratulated too, both for their devotion and their significant contribution to specific sectors in the community.
This week ( Monday 9th and Wednesday 11th December) UCLAN held a graduation ceremony for more than 1,500 students. These included undergraduates, postgraduates and doctorate students. It all took place at the transformed Sir Tom Finney Sports Centre.
Throughout the ceremonies UCLAN played tribute to the outstanding work the following three people have contributed to over their career:-
- Dr Eric Northey
- Professor Croisdale-Appleby (both appointed Honorary Doctorates)
- Dr Susan Scurlock MBE ( received an Honorary Fellowship)
Here are the reasons why they were awarded these high class distinctions:-
Playwright and mental health activist Dr Eric Northey was recognised in response to how he dealt with the development of the Whittingham Lives Association project. It was his assertiveness and leadership that enabled the work to be done effectively. His work to the University is invaluable and it’s because of this that he was given the Honorary Doctorate.
Professor Croisdale-Appleby, is known internationally for his campaigns around the injustice of apartheid. Locally, he has made great strides in improving the health and social care sector, particularly through his development of social work education. His devotion helped him receive the Honorary Doctorate.
UCLAN alumna Dr Susan Scurlock, created the national charity Primary Engineer this is one of many pioneering concepts she has been involved in. Susan was recognised for her significant contribution she has made to education and engineering.
The University hosted eight graduation ceremonies over the space of two-and-a-half days and surrounding University buildings were used to accommodate gown hire, official photography and celebratory post-event reception.
It was an important couple of days both for the students and the more experienced adults. Families and friends helped support the achievements of the talented individuals who brought something unique to their time at UCLAN.
