Buildings of Distinction - King George's Hall - Blackburn
Jul, 14 2026
The people of Lancashire have chosen a distinct building to watch shows and be entertained by. Blackburn’s King George’s Hall contains three halls –
- The Concert Hall – seating up to 1800
- The Windsor Suite – capacity 750
- Blakey’s Café Bar – capacity 500.
It is also the location of Blackburn register office and is operated by Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council.
The building we see today was designed by architects Briggs, Wolstenholme and Thornely with initial construction underway in 1913, halted however because of the First World War. It was officially opened in October 1921 and was extensively renovated in 1994. It stands as Grade 2 listed building.
Over the years it’s had some big names performed at the venue and almost a century since its official opening a certain Oasis frontman popped into town to perform a medley of Oasis classics and his own solo material.

In the 1970’s, David Bowie, Queen and Mott the Hoople performed here before they played at much bigger venues. This would have been a more intimate audience for their songs.
50 years later and the King George’s Hall is still attracting people to its venue. Why? Because it successfully books big name acts, theatrical shows and incredible explorers. To find out the latest shows, times and booking information simply visit the following website link –

For more than a century The Blackburn King George’s Hall has been a building of distinction. Primarily because it hasn’t lost its value and place for the people of Lancashire. Renovation plans hasn’t dramatically changed the overall intention of the venue – to entertain and to give the people of Lancashire a place of escapism, to be with friends and loved ones and to share a moment to experience their favourite live act, treasured comedian or a well- known face highlighting their journey of adventure.
King George’s Hall also shares the bill with Darwen Library Theatre - Two great venues, one creative heart.
