Music legend Cher has sat comfortably over a 63 year career in the music business. She turned 80 this May and shows no sign of slowing down.

She was actually born Cheryl Sarkisan but abbreviated it to Cher for popstar status. Known as the ‘Goddess of Pop’, Cher has consistently moved with the times and has managed to stay relevant in the 21st century.

For the next 9 minutes and 32 seconds please allow Cher to open up to TODAY about her memoir, her fractured relationship with the late Sonny Bono and her career in music –

One of Cher’s pivotal moments not mentioned in the film was when she recorded a cover of the 1963 song ‘It’s in his Kiss’ which was originally released as a single by Merry Clayton but did not chart. The song was made a hit a year later when recorded by Betty Everett.  It was also made a hit by Ramona King and Linda Lewis.

However, when Cher covered it she gave it gold makeover and added the (It’s in his kiss) in the title. The song was reborn in 1990 thanks to the soundtrack for the film ‘Mermaids’. The song reached number 1 in the UK and became a worldwide hit. The music video features Cher with Winona Ryder and Christina Ricci, who played here daughters in the film, in a music studio in the clothes and styles of the1960s period of the film (clips of which are shown throughout).

Let’s remind ourselves of that classic music video –

Following ‘Mermaids’ Cher made a couple of cameo appearances in Robert Altman’s ‘The Player’ (1992) and Pret-a- Porter (1994).

Despite a tumultuous marriage to Sonny Bono, his death in 1998 from a skiing accident recalled him as ‘the most unforgettable character’ she had met in a tearful eulogy at his funeral.

Cher made an amazing comeback in the charts with her 22nd studio album ‘Believe’ in 1998, marking a remarkable shift in sound from rock to 1970s disco inspired dance pop. It became a worldwide phenomenon.

In recent years she has returned to film and made an iconic role as the grandmother of Sophie and mother of Donna in ‘Mamma Mia! Here we Go Again’ (2018).

To celebrate 60 years in music, Cher released the compilation album Forever (2024), available as a 21-track standard edition and a 40-track digital edition, Forever Fan, featuring Sonny & Cher songs and lesser-known tracks curated by Cher.

Her official website is still active and available to view here – https://www.cherfanclub.com/
