Supply Chain Resilience Enables Creative Communities

Supply Chain Resilience Enables Creative Communities

Aug, 5 2014

Whilst supply chain resilience is often discussed in relation to business organisations, it is also relevant to the education, health and creative industries. We may have experienced the inconvenience brought upon by incidents such as an unexpected IT/telecommunications outage which resulted in lost productivity. Perhaps our websites provided by third parties may have been compromised at some point, leaving us unable to service our clients. The departure of our suppliers’ key staff may have caused delays in our projects, possibly exposing us to financial loss. Given these examples, it is clear why ensuring resilience in relation to our suppliers is essential.

Findings from the BCI Supply Chain Resilience Survey have emphasised that supply chain resilience require understanding our organisations’ unique context and embedding adaptive behaviours. What may be good for a FTSE 100 company may not be appropriate for a further education college, a GP practice or an arts studio. Nonetheless, all organisations stand to lose value once disruption strikes. As such, thinking about resilience in relation to our organisation’s supply chain – and being familiar with the challenges that may disrupt our delivery of products and services – may not just save us from headache, but also enable us to focus on our core functions. Indeed, we can build creative communities if we can better adapt to disruption.

Historically, the education, health and creative industries have comprised less than 10% of total responses to the BCI Supply Chain Resilience Survey. As a global study that aims to measure the impact of supply chain disruptions across different industries, we would like to know your experiences. In return, the BCI will be offering complimentary copies of the survey report ahead of its launch at the BCI World Conference and Exhibition this November. This report has been an important policy-setting tool for many organisations and we would be glad to share this with you.

The BCI Supply Chain Resilience Survey is ongoing until the 23rd August. A copy of last year’s report is publicly available. A five-year trend analysis is available at the BCI website. Patrick Alcantara (BCI Research Associate/CCG UK member) wrote this blog post.
