~As a teenager you may have found the subject of Integrated Humanities at Secondary School rather tiresome and boring. But as you got older you began to form an appreciation for it and a longing  to discern it’s definition. It is quite simply the study of how people process and document the human experience. This process is defined into four categories :-

  • The study of classical languages and classical literature.
  • The Latin and Greek classics as a field of study.
  • Literature, philosophy, art  as distinguished from the natural sciences.
  • The study of literature, philosophy and art.

Knowledge of these records of human experience gives us the opportunity to feel a sense of connection to those who have come
before us, as well as to our contemporaries.

The School of Humanities and Social Sciences are hosting an evening of exciting poetry readings and book launches to coincide with the
nationwide Festival of the Humanities. One particular book launch includes Dr Keith Vernon's book on the history of the University,
established in Preston, as the Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge in 1828.

This will take place on Wednesday November 21st between 3.30pm 8pm, located at UCLAN’S Livesey House Café, Livesey House,
Preston.

Two key poets to look out for include :- Dr. David Troupes and Jhilmil Breckenridge. David has published two books of poetry with
Two Ravens Press and his poems are published in PN Review Carcanet New Poetries VI and Magma. His comic strip Buttercup
Festival has also appeared regularly in PN Review.

Jhilmil has recently finalised her latest book of poems ‘Reclamation Song‘ , published by Red River. Jhilmil is also a  writer and  activist
who works in mental health advocacy developing poetry as therapy, creative writing and writing for wellbeing.

Please note :- this is a free event to attend and no booking is required.
In addition, refreshments are  provided and all are welcome.
