~Modesty, religious belief, fashion and women’s rights. Topics of which could cause an immeasurable amount of conflict and debate. Many people would  resort to either protests or bold statements to bring home these subjects of interest. But a much more sophisticated approach is being delivered which brings a much more cultural perspective on the topics mentioned.

On Tuesday October 2nd UCLAN are opening an exhibition at the PR1 Gallery, Victoria Building, Adelphi Street, Preston. It is open to the public from 9am - 6pm.

‘Hidden Gems’ will exhibit scarves and portraits inspired by pieces from the Gawthorpe Textiles Collection. The exhibition is part of an Arts Council funded project collaboration between UCLan and Gawthorpe Textiles Collection involving researchers, local artists, stylists, photographers, school children and community members.

The concept behind the Hidden Gems project is considered in two important ways :-

1. To uncover Hidden Gems from the rare samples in the textile collection at Gawthorpe

2. To find Hidden Gems from the local Asian community members who had undiscovered artistic talents.

An oblique reference to the subjects mentioned at the outset helped to give a name to the exhibition. ‘Hidden Gems’ therefore is given to reveal that there is something much more to uncover within the realms of modesty, religious belief, fashion and women’s rights.
