~100 years ago we were living in quite a different world. The first World War was reaching it’s conclusion, the late Queen Mother was just a mere 18 years old and women were given the right to vote.
It’s the latter part which bears particular significance. This month, events up and down the country are celebrating the 100th anniversary of women winning the right to vote.
On Wednesday 28th February 2018 at The Tech Hub, Edge Hill Uni between 2-9pm is a day simply entitled, :- The Wonder Women Campaign: ‘100 Years of Women’s Right to Vote’ Suffragette Symposium.
Edge Hill University was the first non-denominational teacher training college for women, founded as an institution which broke traditional barriers for women and promoted women’s rights.
A Symposium has been prepared for the interested public and those desiring to learn more about the vast progress that has been made since the 1918 ‘Representation of the People Act’.
The graphic novel ‘Sally Heathcote :- Suffragette’ will be discussed in depth by acclaimed author and scholar Mary Talbot and artist Bryan Talbot .
At the conclusion of the day’s proceedings the 2015 film ‘Suffragette’ starring Meryl Streep, Cary Mulligan and Helena Bonham Carter will be screened. Inspired by true events, this provides an accurate portrayal of the timeframe in 1918 as the film develops the passion and heartbreak of those who risked their lives for women’s right to vote – their jobs, their homes and their children.
Academics from a variety of subjects across the North West’s most established Universities will discuss in great length the history of the women’s suffrage movement, the suffragette as a cultural icon and the 21st century representations of suffrage and its ideologies.

The event will take place at The Tech Hub Lecture Theatre which is Building 15 at Edge Hill Uni.

The world has come along way since 1918. The UK is now on it’s second female Prime Minister and engagements abroad prove that women are striving to lead the way, but there is still some distance to go. Show your support by attending this event :-
