One Billion Rising For Justice UCLAN - 11.30am- 12.30pm - 14/2/18

Feb, 6 2018

~Next Thursday ( February 15th ) a select number of Preston’s people will be recovering from a one hour dance workout. This isn’t an average dance aerobic class though as the following information will reveal.

UCLAN are staging it’s annual ‘One Billion Rising for Justice’ event on Wednesday February 14th. A day for many to spend with their loved ones, however, this Valentines Day is about remembering women who are  subject to intolerable violence as well as worker exploitation, poverty, racism, refugee rights and transphobia.

It will mark an hour of solidarity to a rhythmic dance tune in which all participants are encouraged to dance and show their support. If you’d like to get involved make sure you arrive at the Sir Tom Finney Sports Centre at 11.30am with the dance concluded by 12.30pm lunchtime. It will be choreographed by World Salsa Dance Champion Phil Kaila and Salsa Northwest so you cannot miss a beat.

Still unsure about getting involved? How about this alarming fact :-

One in three women will be beaten or raped in their lifetime. With the world population at seven billion, this adds up to more than one billion women and girls.

Nigel Farnsworth, UCLAN  Creative Communities Group (CCG) manager, is organising the gathering. He speaks about the powerful impact the event has had both on a local and international scale and how Preston defiantly supports the mistreatment of women,

“This is the sixth year that the CCG has organised a One Billon Rising event, which allows the local community to join in a global gathering and make their voices heard. It is the biggest mass action in human history and we are proud to play a part and show the world that Preston stands against violence towards women and girls.”

People are free to turn up on the day at the Sir Tom Finney Sports Centre on UCLAN’S  Preston Campus. Anyone wanting more information can contact Nigel Farnworth on NFarnworth4@uclan.ac.uk or by calling 01772 894707.

The one hour dance event will be captured on camera and shared on the One Billion Rising website as well as those taken abroad. A video of last year’s UCLAN  gathering is available on the University’s YOUTUBE channel.

One Billion Rising is an action led by women for women but we need our feminist men to support us. Whatever your gender please come and join us in our dance of solidarity and help end violence against women and girls.
