Design In Mental Health Conference May 2016

May, 12 2016

~Sixteen years ago I was in a mental health psychiatric hospital called Queen’s Park, in Blackburn. Back then the accommodation and overall institution was cold and unappealing. Each room had a mere curtain to separate you from the other person. There were cigarette marks on the furniture and in the smoking room. The carpet was dirty. I could go on. It just had the atmosphere that was distant, toxic and, in fact no doubt spurred me on to get well quick so I could go home and be in a secure place that I felt loved and safe in.

In 2016 I’ve moved on a lot  and far more removed than that contaminated place. Thankfully mental health hospitals and wards in general are under the microscope and identified as a crucial need to promote a persons better mental health.

Design in Mental Health helps mental institutions like the one mentioned at the onset get a better start and seek to enhance the recovery of a chronically ill person. Here’s some information about it and the conference happening next week :-

Whether you are looking at adding new buildings, considering refurbishing existing buildings or ongoing maintenance work Design in Mental Health 2016 is here to help you source information, solutions and ideas.

The event consists of the Design in Mental Health Network’s annual conference, awards dinner and an exhibition that showcases the latest product innovations designed to enhance mental health environments.

The ideal goal is to create therapeutic environments that will be maintained now and well into the future. It is the only existing organisation currently running in the UK.

Here are the top three areas in which it is confidently structured and made attainable for everyone involved :-

 The Exhibition is a unique marketplace where manufacturers and providers can meet decision-makers and specifiers, make new contacts, generate leads and new product ideas, and identify current and emerging opportunities in the mental health sector.

This year’s Conference will feature over 40 speakers, with specialist content. Lively and authoritative, it’s THE professional gathering for everyone concerned with the built environment in mental health.

The conversations between architects, contractors, mental health providers and service users, each bringing their unique insights and perspectives to creating effective therapeutic environments.

Design in Mental Health works collaboratively with some significant people they are, as follows:-

* Architects

*Contractors

*Consultants

*Mental health professionals from the NHS and the private sector

* Service users themselves.

It’s this tour de force of individuals that make it a dynamic and innovative organisation. Seeking to enrich the lives of the unfortunate whose circumstances mean they have to spend a considerable number of weeks, maybe even months, for some its years inside, what could be deemed by some as a prison cell. So Design in Mental Health wants to change that perspective and somehow make it more welcoming than first experienced.

The conference is expected to take place next Tuesday 17th May between 8.45am-5.30pm. The awards dinner is scheduled to begin at 7.30pm and concluding at 12.30am. The second day of the conference will take place on Wednesday 18th May from 9am -4.15pm.
