Mental Health Awareness Week ( May 16th -20th ) 2016 Feature Film Included On The Friday 20th May

May, 10 2016

~Our mental and physical health should be of great importance to us. Whether we are young or old how we look after our mental faculties and our physical well being can have either a positive or negative result.

We live in an age where people are raising families and  have the pressure of putting money on the table. Or if we’re children or teens stress from school can have a detrimental effect on a young person and can leave them experiencing mental health problems as they reach adulthood like bipolar disorder, ongoing therapy sessions, persistent feelings of low self esteem, reliance on medication to get from one day to the next or feeling lovesick from the anxiety of a recently finished relationship.

If your thinking the above sounds like a brief synopsis of a popular film, you’d be right.

As part of Mental Health Awareness Week scheduled to take place next Monday, May 16th, UCLAN are scheduling a 2012 film that captured the hearts of many in it’s often comical take on mental health yet not neglecting the message of such a serious issue.

‘Silver Linings Playbook’ will be screened on Friday 20th May at the Foster Building UCLAN in the Mitchell and Kenyon cinema. Be seated for 6.30pm with the feature film kicking off at 7pm.

To not give too much away here is a brief summary of what the film is about :-

After a stint in a mental institution, former teacher Pat Solitano moves back in with his parents and tries to reconcile with his ex-wife. Things get more challenging when Pat meets Tiffany, a mysterious girl with problems of her own.

Directed by David O. Russell and starring Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and film legend Robert De Niro the movie went on to win 1 Oscar, 87 wins and 144 nominations. Interestingly among its 8 Academy Award nominations, this film became the first to earn nods in all four acting categories since Reds (1981) and the first "Big Five" (Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Writing) nominee since Million Dollar Baby (2004). Director David O. Russell repeated the same rare feat the following year with American Hustle (2013).

Pat ( played by Bradley Cooper ) has an inspiring positive attitude and in one scene with a psychiatrist he believes the ‘silver lining’ is the highest point of feeling good. Yet Tiffany (played by Jennifer Lawrence ) stifles his joy  with this quote from the romantic comedy classic,

“Humanity is just nasty and there's no silver lining.”

If you have an open mind like Pat that is free from the continual stigma of mental health then please feel free to attend this film with like minded individuals. ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ :- Friday 20th May 6.30pm seated, film 7pm onwards.  Venue :- UCLAN’S Mitchell and Kenyon cinema at the Foster Building.
