They say that ‘laughter is the best medicine’, but with this doctor it’s more than humour that revives an ill fever.

Having been labelled a movie star, rock star, tv and radio presenter as well as a social and cultural commentator, it is his biting, satirical, political and funny poems that he is most fondly remembered by.

Dr. John Cooper Clarke set igniting the cultural and musical world in the late 70’s with band The Invisible Girls. His records were a highbrow cocktail of punk rock and Clarke’s unique delivery of poems. This gave him the springboard to venture out as a leading voice of punk and youth culture towards the end of the 1970’s. He became known as ‘the punk poet’ or ‘the bard of Salford’.

As a live act, he was enigmatic. Stick thin tall with an uncombed nest of black hair, shades to match, drainpipe trousers and Cuban heeled boots.

He may not be appearing in Salford, Manchester but this eccentric character is coming to the Charter Theatre Preston on Monday 8th February 2016 at 8pm. Here’s how you and your family and friends can watch a glimpse of this national treasure. Simply dial the box office on :- 01772 80 44 44 or email info@prestonguildhall.co.uk for more information. Tickets are priced at £21.50 and the Preston Guild Hall and Charter Theatre is based at Lancaster Road, Preston, PR1, 1HT.

Over the years he has inspired people to make giant leaps towards creativity and expression in the form of Pulp front man Jarvis Cocker, Alan Partridge creator Steve Coogan. He has also inspired this current wave of modern musicians such as the Arctic Monkeys and Plan B.

In July 2013 he rightly earned his honorary doctorate at Salford Uni. His work as thus gone on to the next generation of creative writers and literature enthusiasts. His poems are studied by thousands of college and university students globally. This means his writing will remain a staple point in the educational remit of writing long after he’s gone.

This year he has worked on new work from his Essex home and is absorbed in new, exciting poems and monologues that will no doubt feature in his 2016 live tour. He is, quite simply the hardest working man in show business.
