When people think of the name Alice, they may consider Alice Cooper or the rock band Alice in Chains. More well known however is the fictional name Alice in ‘Alice in Wonderland’. We all know the tale, she finds herself in a mysterious land and drinks a variety of potions and edible things that make her small and tall.

The film ‘Still Alice’ starring Julianne Moore, sees Alice Howland, a renowned linguistic professor, happily married and has three grown children. Then something serious changes.

The difference between ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and ‘Still Alice’ is that one is purely fantasy and the other a genuine account of a person diagnosed with an incurable disease. Alice Howland receives the shocking news from her doctor she has the early onset of Alzheimer’s.

Her family and those closest to her face the intolerable predicament of being immersed in the degenerative neurological ailment which slowly progresses to an inevitable conclusion they all dread.

A month after ‘World Mental Health Day’ The Grand in Clitheroe is hosting ‘Ladies Film Night’ on Tuesday evening November 10th 2015 and you could be one of many to sit and enjoy fine dining and this excellent film.

Tickets are priced at £15.50 advance which includes a two course meal. This consists of beef bourguignon with French beans and roasted new potatoes and dessert featuring strawberry semi freddo vanilla Madeline and pistachio cream and for the vegetarian take on things it is blue cheese baked filed mushroom with mini roasted potatoes and rocket salad.

Unlike Alice in Wonderland, Alice returns to place of normality and safety  but for Alice Howland she continues to fight her inner decay, making the most of her remaining time to find love, peace and make life worth living.
