MusicBox - James - Defying their Name, Epic like the Sun
Jul, 7 2026
The formation of the band James was established in 1982. However, their ultimate name wasn’t created initially. Complicated names came about first including – ‘Venereal and the Diseases’, ‘Volume Distortion’ ‘Model Team’ and ‘Tribal Outlook’.
It wasn’t until a member of the band came up with the idea of ‘James’ as they didn’t associate with the name in that respect. James remained and Factory Records co-founder Tony Wilson offered them an album deal but the band, by now a settled live act, were worried about tarnishing their material in the studio and settled instead for a three – track EP.
By 1989 they had gone with Rough Trade Records and they had released the singles ‘Sit Down’ and ‘Come Home’ both featured on the album ‘Gold Mother’ – June 1990 release and they sailed on as part of the Madchester movement winning them public attention and mainstream recognition.
Here is Tim Booth frontman of James discussing ageism in music, topping the charts and AI –
Seven years after ‘Gold Mother’ came their successful album, the February 1997 classic ‘Whiplash’. Next year marks 30 years since it was released and it hasn’t waned in time. They recruited producers Stephen Hague, Brian Eno and Baynton – Power to deliver an album of class distinction. It featured the singles-
- Waltzing Along
- She’s a Star
- Tomorrow
‘Tomorrow’ channels the up tempo drumming pattern found in earlier singles such as ‘Laid’ and its overall guitar riff and uplifting lyrics drew comparison to the U2 songs ‘Where the streets have no name’ and ‘With or Without You (1987). Yet 10 years later they wrote their own classic composition and remains a fan favourite when performed live.

James continue to raise the bar when it comes to contemporary music. Not conforming to the concept of Britpop with music that shifts dynamic in the modern era. A band that is set adrift but with a name as simple as The Smiths with a frontman as complex as Morrissey. We look forward to future music from James.
