The Creative Entrepreneur - Simon Cowell - July 2026

Jul, 1 2026

40 years ago a youthful Simon Cowell was helping music acts breakthrough the mainstream. He had his first song in 1986 with ‘So Macho’ by Sinitta.

In the 1990’s he helped champion novelty acts such as Robson & Jerome become popular in the music charts. He also established groups such as Five, Westlife and Teletubbies.

However his major role appeared in the new century as principal judge on shows such as Pop Idol, The X – Factor and Britain’s Got Talent. The promotional video for the 2026 show is available to view here –

His cutting comments became a staple point of Saturday night television yet it attracted high viewers from the competitive BBC channel. Cowell could see genuine talent and although his comments didn’t always go down with the audience and clashed with the other judges he was almost always right with the star potential.

In 2005 Simon formed a new company, Syco. It is divided into three units –

  • Syco Music
  • Syco TV
  • Syco Film

The internationally successful operatic group ll Divo was formed through Syco, consisting of three opera singers and one pop singer of four different nationalities.

The following year, 2006, ‘American Inventor’ debuted on ABC. Cowell co-produced the show with British entrepreneur Peter Jones, who had devised the concept. Having a similar format to the BBC's Dragons' Den, a show on which Jones was one of the investors, fledgling entrepreneurs from across the United States competed to see who could come up with the best new product concept.

20 years since establishing music acts of the 1980s Cowell had come along way. The following film shows his entrepreneurial journey –

In 2007 Cowell was the executive producer of Grease is the Word for ITV. This show set out to find performers to play Danny and Sandy in the 2007 West End revival of Grease. It was hosted by Zoë Ball and judged by Britons David Ian and is old colleague from the 1980’s Sinitta and Americans David Gest and Brian Friedman. It wasn’t his most successful but it was a worthy effort.

By 2018, he made the bold move for a BBC transition with ‘The Greatest Dancer’.  In the show, dancers competed for a £50,000 and a performance on the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing. A second series was aired in 2020.

His most recent show was the 2025 Netflix series ‘Simon Cowell’s The Next Big Act’. He successfully managed One Direction previously so this was his bid to find the next boyband. The ultimate line-up became ‘December 10’. The group were later signed to EMI Records.

Four decades since his early rise as a music mogul and championing various novelty acts he has climbed through the ranks to become the top selling entrepreneur we see in 2026. A series of talent shows mixing dance, vocalists and entertainers has become the ingredients for an illustrious career in show business. Cowell’s comments haven’t always gone down well with the act as well as fellow judges but when he gets them to perform a ‘second song’ they illuminate the room and become the star potential Simon was convinced they always had.
