May, 7 2026
In 1996 there was a serious gap in the market for a female fronted band that would potentially create global domination. In the early quarter of the year many teenage girls had their hearts broken when Take That called it a day. However, by the spring instead of pining for young men they were aspiring to be like young women thanks to five ladies simply known as The Spice Girls.
But their formation goes back earlier than 1996. It was February 1994 when Heart Management put an advertisement in the trade paper The Stage asking for singers to audition for an all-female pop band at London’s Dancework studios.
Approximately 400 women attended the audition on 4th March 1994. It was narrowed down to four with Emma Bunton becoming the fifth member of the iconic group.
The group began professional songwriting lessons, during one session, they wrote a song called ‘Sugar and Spice’ which ultimately became the name of the band.
Their debut single was the catchy friendship embracing track ‘Wannabe’ – released 26th June 1996.The lyrics address the value of female friendship over romantic relationships it also introduced fans to the members with one welcoming each girl.
Let’s remind ourselves of the song in the following music video –
Despite welcoming each member in their classic song a pop magazine gave nicknames to each girl to identify them and make them personal to fans –
- Geri Halliwell – Ginger Spice – Due to her fiery red hair and fiery personality
- Victoria Beckham – Posh Spice – Due to her sophisticated style and refined demeanor
- Mel B – Scary Spice – Due to her wild curly hair and fearless personality
- Emma Bunton – Baby Spice –As she was the youngest with a sweet innocent image
- Mel C – Sporty Spice – Because of her athletic background and impressive physical abilities during live shows.
The following 13 minute film will give an early glimpse to their rise to the top. It features all five girls and amidst all the chaos and youthful vigour comes five girls who seriously know what they’re doing they’re just too smart enough to reveal it all in a quarter of an hour. This was the 1990’s a time before the digital age so they receiveda lot of fan mail via letters –
30 years later and they did become household names. Their legacy intact with each member venturing out on solo careers since 2000. Numerous reunions, comeback singles and classic performances such as the 2012 Olympics is a testimony to the band’s iconic status as they paved the way for other girls’ bands to come.

In March 2026, the Royal Mint produced a range of coins to commemorate the group's thirtieth anniversary. Despite media rumours, Chisholm confirmed the same month that there were no plans at all for the group to reunite to commemorate the thirtieth anniversary of "Wannabe" and their debut album in 2026.
