Creative Outlooks - How Six Cool Stars Made up a Red Dwarf
Apr, 21 2026
You wouldn’t have thought a British science fiction comedy set in space following the intrepid adventures of its crew would have been so successful and lasted so long. Yet Red Dwarf as an enduring appeal that makes it so unique from other comedies as each character has its own brand of humour that allows it to become such a cult series throughout almost 40 years on television.
The series was created by Rob Grant and Doug Naylor. We sadly lost Grant back in February aged 70 but he is forever known as the Red Dwarf co-creator and generated a legion of fans who followed the cast which included –
- Dave Lister - A spacebum and the last surviving human - played by Craig Charles
- Arnold Rimmer – A hologram known for his snobbish insults – played by Chris Barrie
- The Cat – A descendant of Dave Lister’s cat – flamboyant and vain – played by Danny John Jules
- Holly – The ship’s on board computer – played by Norman Lovett and Hattie Hayridge
- Kryten – A series 4000 mechanoid who cannot lie – played Robert Llewellyn
- Kristine Kochanski – Lister’s love interest – played by Clare Grogan and Chloe Annett
That’s the crew now let’s remind ourselves why Red Dwarf is so awesome in the following 11 minute video –
Fans of the series were excited when news of a potential feature film as an adaptation of the television series was announced. Pre-production began in 2004 and filming was planned for 2005. However, sufficient funding was not forthcoming and production was put on hold.
Despite a lack of film and no new series on the horizon, the late Rob Grant penned his final book – ‘Red Dwarf – Titan’ a brand new prequel novel – set for release July 16th 2026. The newly revealed synopsis reveals that Titan will show something we saw precious little of on-screen: the period before the accident that wiped out Red Dwarf’s crew:
“Before the beginning. Before the accident that wipes out the crew, the mining ship Red Dwarf is in orbit around Titan, and the crew is heading down for shore leave, all with different intentions… However, their objectives are scuppered somewhat unexpectedly when they receive a cryptic message. A message from the future. Two feuding crewmen are catapulted into a breakneck race to save not only this but every other Reality. So strap yourself in – the Dwarfers are taking on TITAN.”
Hopefully this new book will one day be developed into a new television series.

So whenever it’s cold outside and there’s no kind of atmosphere, you’re all alone, more or less. Fly far away from here and have fun, fun, fun, in the sun, sun, sun. Closing lyrics to a madcap television show that has spanned generations of fans from several decades. It pays tribute to science fiction shows like Star Trek yet still maintains that level of comedic brilliance that sets it apart from its contemporaries. Truly a work of great content- thank you Rob Grant.
