Paris – 1987. Two students were immersed in their schoolwork  yet their shared love of music formed a bond into adulthood.

By 1992 – Guy –Manuel de Homem- Christo and Thomas Bangalter had formed a short-lived band called ‘Darlin’.

But it gave them the skills to form a more consistent band which utilized electronic instruments. The new group was given its following a negative review of their previous band. Melody Maker magazine journalist Dave Jennings called their music ‘a daft punky thrash’. And there it was – Daft Punk was born.

Their first commercially successful single was the 8th May 1995 single ‘Da Funk’. The music video is unique in that it features Charles the Dog Boy walking the streets of New York City. Let’s remind ourselves of that classic –

Over the next 15 years the duo –

  • Released their debut album ‘Homework’ – 1997.
  • Worked with music directors including Spike Jonze
  • Released their second album ‘Discovery’ –2001.
  • Unleash their distinctive robot costumes.
  • Released their third album ‘Human After All – 2005
  • World Tour ‘Alive 2006/2007’
  • Announcement band had composed 24 tracks for the film Tron – Legacy – 2009

The film was released in 2010 and was the second instalment in the Tron series and a sequel to Tron (1982). A further sequel Tron Ares was released this year (2025)

Daft Punk were the principal composers of the soundtrack in 2010 which featured an 85 – piece orchestra recorded at AIR Lyndhurst Studios in London. It was futuristic and exciting much like the film and the band’s music.

From the original 2010 soundtrack this is ‘End of Line’ –

Despite pre-empting their demise the dynamic duo still had a good few years left in them. Their fourth studio album ‘Random Access Memories’ was released May 2013 with some amazing songs such as the classic ‘Get Lucky – a collaboration with Pharrell Williams.

Other collaborations included working with the Weeknd on the 2016 singles ‘Starboy and ‘I Feel it Coming’.

Fans didn’t see it coming when the duo called it a day in 2021. The French musicians were apparently going in different directions, with one favouring hip- hop over film.

In September 2025, the online video game Fortnite revealed the virtual "Daft Punk Experience", adding interactive activities, Daft Punk outfits, and other accessories. Billed as the biggest Fortnite musical event so far, it was made in collaboration with Daft Life. Cédric Hervet, Daft Punk's creative director, stated in an GQ interview that the event focused on Daft Punk's legacy. In the same interview, the Epic Games executive Alex Rigopulos described the project as a love letter for the band.

Although much has been said about their music, it has to be known that their identity is something of a mystery. Shrouded by robot disguises, masks, space suits and helmets actually increased their popularity. Their presence never apparent in their music videos and their songs a mark of their mastery behind the mixing desks. They will forever be known as ‘The Masked Purveyors of the Dance Music Scene’.
