MusicBox- Black Sabbath - Heavy Metal to the Masses

Sep, 7 2025

Nearly 60 years ago a series of men went out on a mission to be the pioneers of a new wave of music – heavy metal. It was Birmingham 1968 when guitarist Tony Iommi, drummer Bill Ward, bassist Geezer Butler and the recently departed frontman Ozzy Osbourne formed Black Sabbath.

The band often dealt with controversial lyrics but it was their music that helped propel them to a global level taking the heavy metal genre to a mainstream audience.

Their first three albums set the tone of the development of heavy metal and became the blueprint of their sound. Taken from their second record – 1970’s ‘Paranoid’ was the title track. It went on to become a live favourite and remains a classic to this day.

Let’s remind ourselves of it in the following music video –

Sabbath’s next series of albums saw them explore more experimental and progressive styles of music throughout the 1970’s.

At the closure of the decade frontman Osbourne was fired from the band and replace by former Rainbow vocalist Ronnie James Dio who recorded three albums with the band.

By 1984 the Black Sabbath we once knew had changed completely as nearly all but one had left the band. This led guitarist Iommi on a path to assemble a new line up of the legendary heavy metal band.

Fans were delighted when, in 1997, the original line up reformed and released the appropriately titled live album ‘Reunion’. They also toured sporadically until 2005.

A hiatus followed until another reunion in 2011 and a subsequent final studio album 13 released in – 2013. The band played a farewell gig in their home city where it all started in 2017 but this wasn’t quite the end – yet.

Osbourne and Iommi performed together for the closing ceremony of the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and the original line – up reunited for the very last time for a final show on 5th July 2025 ‘Back to the Beginning’ – Villa Park. It was an emotional and powerful show, demonstrating Osbourne’s determination to perform against all the odds.

Ozzy later died seventeen days after this historic gig. His swan song wasn’t about riches as he’d made enough in his life, battling with a crippling Parkinsons disease, the gig went to the charity, showcasing his selfless love for people despite his worsening condition plus he did it all for the fans when he could have rested prior to his passing.

This shows the kind of man Ozzy was, people may assume the light was on but there was nobody home but that wasn’t Ozzy, this was a man who had music shaking in his bones and motivating him to do good with intellect and passion for the people that made him the legendary artist we remember him by.

Black Sabbath were one of the best heavy metal acts of the last 60 years. They will go down in history as pioneers of the genre bringing it to the masses and creating a movement their contemporaries could merely touch base at.

Their website is still active to this day –

A 100 – minute concert film of their last gig –‘Back to the Beginning – Ozzy’s Final Bow’ will receive a theatrical release in early 2026 and will be released to DVD and Blu-ray later that same year. This is welcome news to fans as they get to remind themselves what an enigmatic performer Ozzy was, and a thrill to see those amazing songs played one last time.
