Nearly 40 years ago a Welsh rock band was formed in Blackwood, Caerphilly. It was the brainchild of frontman and lead guitarist James Dean Bradfield, percussionist Sean Moore and Nicky Wire, bass guitar and lyricist. They were also joined by co-lyricist and rhythm guitarist Richey Edwards.
Manic Street Preachers were something of a 1990’s Welsh Cool Cymru cultural movement. Their music slightly edgy and blasting with power punk anthems. As time progressed their album sleeve became a wonderful piece of artwork too featuring their lyrics and often historical quotes with hidden depth and meaning.
With the release of their third album 1994’s Holy Bible, concern began to increase with key member Richey. Fans noticed a more darker sound to the band and this was eclipsed in their lyrics too.
On 1st February 1995 Richey Edwards disappeared. The band had a break musically for 6 months to process what took place as it was an immediate shock to the remaining three who dearly loved Richey. The group had considered disbanding but decided to continue as a three piece.
Their comeback took place on 15th April 1996 with their first single as a three piece the orchestral rock anthem ‘A Design For Life’. The song peaked and debuted at number two on the UK Singles Chart and touched the heart of Manics fans as a fantastic piece of music. Let’s remind ourselves of that iconic song –
Over the last 28 years the band have continued to break the mould in the music industry. Achieving –

- Receiving music awards and nominations
- Embarking on solo careers
- Collaborating with other musicians
They have never forgotten Richey, the man who played an indelible part in their career and who gave them lyrics left behind since his disappearance.
