Blackburn Makes Bid for Jubilee 2022

Blackburn Makes Bid for Jubilee 2022

Nov, 6 2021

In 2002, Preston was honoured to be crowned city status. This became England’s 50th city to coincide with the 50th year of Queen Elizabeth the second’s reign.

Now, almost twenty years later talk is underway for another well known town to reach city status.

The council have met to discuss the future of Blackburn and believe it has the unique strength and spirit as well as a fantastic diverse community to enable it reach such a title.

The bid will be part of a series of towns in the running to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022.

Taking lessons from previous bid applications, this time it will highlight its economic and cultural strengths, as well as its historical links to Royalty, from both the past and the present.

The following people have been asked to get involved in the production of a compelling story which will reflect why Blackburn deserves City Status:-
  • Residents
  • Community groups
  • Business representatives
  • Volunatry orgranisations
All councils are invited to enter the competition on behalf of their towns. The Government have made sure the process is simple and un-costly. The decision will be made by Her Majesty, on ministerial advice.

When you consider what Blackburn currently offers such as the college, The King George’s Hall, excellent bus and train services and all year round events. It could be a real boost for:-
  • Tourism
  •  Media
  •  Economy
  •  Skills
  •  Jobs
Councillor Quesir Mahmood, Joint Deputy Council Leader, who will be leading the application expressed his positive assurance for Blackburn’s bid,

“A successful bid is something that would enormously benefit the whole town and demonstrate our very clear ambition. We more than meet the criteria, we can put in a really strong entry. I often get stopped and asked why we aren’t already a city, we are the perfect example of a small city. We are thinking big for Blackburn.

It’s our people, the strong voluntary and business communities along with the place itself which creates the unique blend we know and love. That’s why home-grown entrepreneurial start-ups to international businesses such as Euro Garages choose to invest and be located here”.

The people of Blackburn are strongly encouraged to get behind the bid.
