Local social worker and rapper uses lockdown to create new music

Sep, 21 2020

18 years ago the popular American rapper Eminem was riding high in the  charts. Having sampled Dido’s ‘Thank you’ his career was going from strength to strength.

It was also during this time that Soundskills - a creative arts centre based in Brookfield - Preston began changing lives for the better.

In 2002 Liam Blake was no doubt looking up to influential rappers that would one day give him the confidence to develop his own niche within the rapping world.

Now in 2020 Liam is a support worker at Soundskills, a state of the art building which comes complete with the following:-
  • Recording studio
  • Activity room
  • Mac suite
  • Photography studio
  • Newly refurbished ‘back yard’ outdoor space.
They are able to offer a range of arts and pastoral services as well as host a range of self help groups.

When he's not dealing with people Liam lays down tracks under the pseudonym BLKY and he has  used lockdown as a way to express his thought and ideas down into music.

His new song reflects heavyweight champion Tyson Fury. ‘King’s Anthem’ is a personal homage to the boxer whom he can really relate with.

Liam had this to say about the fighter,

“Tyson does a lot of work with mental health and is very open about his experiences, which is something that I connect with deeply. Over the years I have watched him go from prospect to champ to 27 stone and drug dependant unable to compete, to pulling himself up by his bootstrap and become a two time heavyweight champion.”

Liam really appreciates Tyson as he has come so far in a relatively short time. His hometown was Morecombe not to far from the Preston district and Liam believes his song ‘King’s Anthem’ attempts to capture the dizzy heights of success Tyson has accomplished so far in his boxing career.
