Army Support For UCLAN Area

Army Support For UCLAN Area

Apr, 17 2020

~It’s good to know that when a crisis occurs trained professionals come to the aide with their expertise and help.

This is evident when the army recently announced they have contributed to convert UCLAN’S Sir Tom Finney Sports Centre in Marsh Lane into a coronavirus patient recovery facility.

It is designed to support the NHS who are a falling short on beds due to the increase of people falling sick over the illness.

The Chair of the Lancashire Resilience Forum (LRF), Deputy Chief Constable Terry Woods, put in a request to the army to clear the UCLAN area last weekend by means of a Military Assistance to the Civil Authority (MACA) plea. Work is currently taking place which will ultimately house 150 beds for patients to recover from the corona virus.

DCC Terry Woods expressed these words in response to the transformation,

“We are grateful to the university for allowing us to use the centre and to the military who worked over the Easter weekend to clear the site so it is ready. We want to be prepared to support the NHS as soon as required, so this work is vital in ensuring that we are.”

The collaboration between UCLAN, The Lancashire Resilience Forum and the military highlights another case of the community really coming together at a time like this.

Graham Baldwin, Vice-Chancellor of UCLAN concludes with these reassuring words,

“We can do this due to the capacity on campus created by our students undertaking their learning online and remotely, and being in the heart of Lancashire this facility is the ideal choice.”
