Strictly Anton and Brazil for Southport Flower Show.

Anton Du Beke, the supremely professional dancer and presenter of the BBC One series Strictly Come Dancing presented the trophies and declared open the Brazilian-themed Southport Flower Show.
Britain’s biggest independent flower show offered the sight, sounds and scents of South America, for four days of exploding colour in the Grand Floral Marquee.
Terry Tasker won nine first prizes for his spectacular begonia blooms and the Winning Twelve Board of the North West Area of the National Dahlia Society.
The stunning large exhibits staged in the grand floral marquee took their inspiration from the styles and culture of Rio with Christ’s statue standing proud amongst flowers and vegetables staged by the Kirkham open prison team, complete with a golden boot in honour of the Colombian World Cup top scorer James Rodriguez. Carnival time and coffee from Brazil from HMP Kennet kept appeared alonmgside HMP YOI Thorn Cross’s tropical show.
A spectacular display of tomatoes from Flavourfresh Salads Ltd formed a football pitch. Sunflowers created
into a pineapple by Poplar Farm Flowers towered over visitors and brought sunshine inside the marquee. Vegetables
featured many times in bids to inspire visitors to grow their own.
Anton du Beke presented Rob Showering with the outdoor trophy for his ‘Alpine Experience’. Rob’s wife Jan and daughter Lucy joined him as he collected the trophy for an array of alpines flowers and plants with rockery and a waterfall.
Joey, the life size, breathing puppet star of ‘War Horse’ arrived at the show before his rNotable displays included Ben Potter with his Hawk display and the Design-a-Garden competition, open to all junior school children and calling for an eco-friendly garden in line with the Brazilian theme. Over 600 young people from 39 schools submitted their designs. The two winners were Sophie Turner from Farnborough Road Junior School, Southport and Alfie Mcloughlin from Holland Moor Primary School, Skelmersdale. The winning designs were constructed by students from Myerscough College under the sponsorship of the West Lancashire Freemasons Charity. the gardens were constructed by
In a bee-keeping feature, visitors could watch honeybees at work and view jars of honey, cakes and beeswax from the exhibitors.
Barry Milne demonstrated the mediaeval art of making the straw skeps, baskets used for hundreds of years for housing bees.
Among the celebrity chefs demonstrating their art, Andrew Nutter, whose restaurant is on the outskirts of Norden near Rochdale, had his audience almost rolling in the aisles with jokes.
Next year’s show in Victoria Park will be themed on China.
