~You may be familiar with spoken word artist ‘George the Poet’. Real name George Mpanga, born in 1991 and brought by Ugandan parents he soon began performing his rap and grime work at just 15 years young.

Following a course in politics in 2013, George, (then 22) decided to change his performance methods to inculcate poetry instead.

Speaking at the time he said, I think rappers are primarily expected to make money for the industry and provide party soundtracks, but obviously there are expectations and grey areas. The poet’s ‘role’ is usually to provide social commentary”.

If you write poetry and have a desire to perform much like George has done, then you may consider an open mic night taking place near you.

The Damson Poets meets once a month at The Continental, South  Meadow Lane, Preston.

The next evening will run next Wednesday 29th January from 7.30pm - 9.30pm. Entrance is free just come along with a literary outlook and a potential plan to perform in the snug area.

Please note:-The only requirement is that each poet should read for a maximum of 5 minutes so that everyone gets a chance to participate.

It’s time to cut your teeth in a place which  will encourage you to blossom, much like George has done:-
