Chinese New Year At The Harris - Preston - 11am - 3.30pm - 25/01/20

~Were you born and raised in China? If so you’ll be very familiar with the traditional Chinese New Year which takes place towards the end of January. Even if you no longer live in China but due to studying or work commitments have found yourself in the UK you can still experience the Chinese New Year celebrations.

This year it begins on Saturday 25th January  and events up and down the country are bringing in the festivities.

The Harris Museum and Art Gallery in Preston, Lancashire are playing host to it this forthcoming Saturday between the hours of 11am - 3.30pm. Admission is completely free just come with a curious eye and a willing spirit.

This year marks the year of the rat and there are plenty of activities for the whole family  to get involved in and performances to watch with amazement.

Here is the complete iteinery of the events planned for the day :-

Flag Market:-
11am - 11.40am: Lion Dance (this will move to the Harris Cafe if the weather is wet)

Ground floor:-
11am - 3.30pm: Children's Space - Chopstick games and tangrams
11am - 3.30pm: Lending Library - Chinese puzzles

First floor:-
Ring balcony:
1pm: Preston's People Choir sing a selection of Chinese songs
1pm: Porcelain handling and tea ceremony - experience a tea ceremony or put on the curator's gloves to handle Chinese porcelain and antique coins
1pm: Chinese folk music will be played live from traditional instruments

Discover Preston room:
1pm: Calligraphy and brush painting - Make a Beijing Opera mask to take home
Heritage Reading Room:
1pm: Chinese knot making
1pm: Introduction to Tai Chi and Martial Arts workshops (20-20 minutes)

2.45pm: Shaolin Fish (Kung Fu) - to book your free place online visit Eventbrite - Chinese New Year Shaolin Fist Kung Fu workshop

Second floor
Fine Art Gallery:
11am - 3.30pm: Lanterns and paper cutting
Wellbeing Gallery:
12pm, 12.45pm, 1.30pm, 2.15pm, 3pm: Traditional storytelling (15 minute sessions)
