~For the majority of people in the world they are swept away and totally immersed in the chaotic season simply known as ‘Christmas’. But what if you’re questioning whether you should participate or maybe you’re looking for an educational programme which has deeper impact than another game of charades.
This Thursday 12th December 2019 UCLAN are broadcasting a live stream of Royal Institutional Christmas Lectures. It will take place at UCLAN’S Darwin Lecture Theatre, Darwin Building, Preston Campus between the hours of 5pm -9pm.
Dr. Hannah Fry will be discussing the question ‘ Why You Can’t Trust Your Gut?’ She will expose how our view of reality is biased, emotional and easily manipulated, whereas maths reveals the underlying truth. In a series of live demos Hannah plays tricks with the audience’s intuitions, to show that our gut feelings rarely beat probability, statistics and big data when it comes to making key decisions.
As an Associate Professor in the Mathematics of Cities at the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis at University College London, Hannah is very experienced in her field of work. She works alongside a unique mix of :-
- Physicists
- Mathematicians
- Computer scientists
- Architects
- Geographers
In order to study patterns in human behaviour, particularly in an urban setting. Her research applies to a wide range of social problems and questions, from shopping and transport to urban crime, riots and terrorism.
She has ventured into the world of television and radio which including the following four media outlets:-
- Britain’s Greatest Invention, City in the Sky (BBC Two)
- Magic Numbers: Hannah Fry’s Mysterious World of Maths
- The Curious Cases of Rutherford and Fry (BBC Radio 4)
- The Maths of Life with Lauren Laverne (BBC Radio 6)
In addition her online YouTube videos have clocked up millions of views, including her popular Royal Institutional talks on the Royal Institutional YouTube channel.
The live screening of Hannah’s discussion will take place from 6pm -8pm. At 5pm you will be able to engage in a series of experiments and puzzles to get you into the festival mathematical spirit. Light refreshments will also be available.
