~As a child you can no doubt remember driving with relatives to Blackpool on a Friday evening in September to see the amazing illuminations. It was a magical experience and it was all topped off with a bag of fish and chips sat in the car at the end of the night.

As an adult we may choose to visit Blackpool but now our circumstances  may mean we have to look after the needs of those who are less fortunate than us. Mencap is a registered charity for people with a learning disability and it could well be that for these adults a visit to Blackpool would mean so much more than when we were children.

But how can a unified team get together and do something positive for this excellent charity?

The MenCap Pedal to the Pier 2019 is taking place next Saturday 14th September between the hours of 7.30am - 7pm. This will see a team of physically active cyclists pedal to the pier as the name suggests all for MenCap.

There’s a choice of two distances:-

  • 100km off-road bike ride from vibrant Manchester to the bright lights of Blackpool
  • 50km off-road bike ride, from the beautiful Cuerden Valley Park in Preston to the bright lights of Blackpool

Throughout your journey you’ll follow the river and traffic free cycle paths, including the Irwell Sculpture Trail and the region's stunning country parks, before the 100km riders hit the Fylde Coast for the final stretch.

If you’ve got reservations about getting involved or worries about how it will all work out, take heart, TeamMencap will provide you with everything you need to ride to success. They will keep you well-fuelled with water and refreshment stops throughout the route as well as at the end.

The cost per person is a total of £35.00. The fee includes the registration, refreshments and a big celebratory finish. Each participant is asked to try their best to raise £100 in order to help people with a learning disability live the life they choose.

By signing up to this challenge you be assured of the following six things:-

  1. A fully signed and marshalled route
  2. Mechanical support throughout the ride
  3. A PDF route map
  4. A downloadable GPX file of the route
  5. Training guides and top fundraising support
  6. A shiny medal to mark your achievement (when you've finished, of course) - show it off and be proud!
