~Our heritage has much to say about the career path we choose as adults. Artists who shape their creative work around their past can speak passionately about the subject they want to portray. Consider the context of poetry, a Glasgow born artist will refer to aspects of the city throughout their work, Scottish identity, nationhood and patriotism will play a part too.

That is exactly what Scottish writer Kevin P Gilday has successfully been able to achieve. In addition to his poetry musings he is also the co-host of spoken word cabaret Sonnet Youth, a National Theatre of Scotland Breakthrough Writer and a BBC Writersroom Scottish Voice.

Last year he released his debut album under the guise of Kevin P Gilday & The Glasgow Cross entitled ‘Experience Essential’ on Iffy Folk Records (Glasgow) and Nymphs & Thugs Records (London).

As a performance poet he has impressed a captive audience at the following ten venues:-

  1. Oran Mor
  2. Tron Theatre
  3. Assembly Roxy
  4. Lemon Tree
  5. Byre Theatre
  6. Beacon Arts Centre
  7. Village Pub Theatre
  8. Eden Court
  9. The Revue Stage (Vancouver)
  10. Tarragon Theatre (Toronto).

To top it all he has twice been shortlisted for the Scottish Short Play of the Year Award.

Now, fresh from a successful Edinburgh Fringe Festival  with his “Suffering From Scottishness” show, the award-winning spoken-word artist will deliver a selection of his best work.

Kevin will be performing his poetry at The Stanley Arms in Preston on Tuesday 17th September 2019 between the hours of 7.30pm - 9pm. Tickets are priced at a reasonable £8 and can be obtained by logging onto the following website address:- www.wegottickets.com/event/481544

Gilday has published four books of poetry, with his latest - Sad Songs for White Boys - released by Speculative Books in July. Suffering From Scottishness dealt particularly with his Glasgow based background.

His show in Preston will include more general themes from his spoken-word back catalogue. Kevin’s performance in Preston will be a low key affair  in comparison to the more wide scale events he’s performed at, which include:-

  • BBC 6Music Festival
  • Glastonbury
  • Fringes (Edinburgh, Toronto, Vancouver)
  • Touring :-UK, Germany, Canada and the US

He has also supported artists such as Akala, Saul Williams, Sage Francis, Alabaster DePlume and George the Poet.

Here are a couple of quotes from some broadsheet papers directly from Kevin’s hometown:-

'A crafted quality worthy of great appreciation...the audience were absolutely held in the story throughout' - Glasgow Guardian

'This was something special. There is a quiet, unusual talent burgeoning here...go and witness it for yourself' - Edinburgh Fringe Review
