~In the late 80’s to the mid 90’s a popular comedy show reduced racism amongst ethnic origin and used light humour to even mock their own black history.
‘Desmond’s’ ran on Channel 4 from January 1989 - December 1994. It’s main focus was on a family who lived in the flat above the barbers shop. As the show was set in Peckham, London it also invited white criticism to the programme too.
25 years after the show closed it’s doors a new play is coming to The Continental of North America. ‘The Community Centre’ is a theatrical production by Nicola Gardner.
This comedy inspired play sees four Caribbean Pensioners live a laidback life until they’re presented with four white British neighbours!
The play will run from Friday 16th - Saturday 17th August 2019. Tickets cost £15 ( £10 concessions). You can book online via the following website :-www.thecommunitycentre.net . Or telephone 07986 497847.
Charlotte Riches, Development Producer for BBC Radio 4 gives this brief but positive response about the play,
‘I thought this was a really nice comic piece, with a wonderful mix of characters. Even though the cast is large, each character is well drawn and individual. There were some great funny moments too - it certainly did feel fresh and different!’
Proof that we really can all live together as one extremely, strange but happy family:-
