Book Launch - West Cumbria :- On The Edge - UCLAN - 12pm -2pm - 12/6/19

~The expression ‘you can’t judge a book by it’s cover’ is often given when individuals make assumptions and stereotypes about people, perhaps by how they dress or the size of their body.

In the context of John Scanlan’s book ‘West Cumbria:- On the Edge’ the familiar expression can be judged- in a positive way. The title and cover speaks  for itself really, several people walking up the Cumbrian coastline on a nice day. But there’s much more to it than that.

Tomorrow lunchtime between the hours of 12pm - 2pm, writer and researcher John Scanlan will be discussing his book to a appreciative audience. It will take place at UCLAN’S Victoria Building Room 005A, Preston Campus.

‘West Cumbria: On the Edge’ is an exploration of a place that has existed throughout its modern history on the edge of things. It draw insights from the following four vital elements :-

  1. Cultural and economic history
  2.  Geography
  3.  Architecture and the built environment
  4.  Literary and artistic representation

John has written a book which creates a detailed account of it’s western location, it’s coastal influence and it’s existence close to and in a stark contrast to it’s more tourist village - The Lake District.

Mr. Scanlan works in cultural aesthetics whose set of principles has helped him to establish himself as a Research Fellow with In Certain Places at UCLAN. John will be available to discuss culturally related topics at the ICP Research Base in Preston on June 12th.

The event is free to attend and no booking is required.
