Solidarities And Collective Action Amongst Young Workers -UCLAN Event - 4pm-5.30pm- 30/5/19
May, 28 2019
~At Secondary School many teenagers are presented with a careers advisor. Adults would argue that these teens would prefer to socialise than to realise that studying now will benefit them in the future.
As a young person progresses in life they are introduced to college and then university. It’s here, in these institutions that they have determined what they want to study and what job/career to consider upon leaving.
Following their graduation an individual is trying to get their head around the concept of work. They know it’s a means to an end and that ultimately every young person will be in the workplace but do they still need support, even at this stage?
The answer is yes they do and thanks to the University of Central Lancashire an event has been organised which caters for the above people.
‘Solidarities and Collective Action Amongst Young Workers’ is taking place this Thursday 30th May at UCLAN’s Greenbank Building, Room 170, Preston Campus. It will begin at 4pm and conclude at 5.30pm.
Guest speaker Professor Mel Simms from Glasgow University will address those attending in the following three areas :-
- How young people experience work
- How they resist precarious employment practices
- How they participate in and build collective responses to their work.
In addition, the 90 minute discussion will consider these key points :-
•Collectivising into trade unions as one way for young people to express their interests and bargain with employers.
• When unions are able to respond with appropriate structures and approaches, young workers have been responsive to their messages.
• Constraints remain including resources, the commitment of the union at the highest levels and structural patterns of young people’s employment, which present practical challenges to organising.
Refreshments will be available from 3.30pm. The event is free to attend.
