Graft - Young Artists Exhibition - The Harris - Preston - 5/4/19 - 2/6/19
Mar, 22 2019
~Young people in the modern era are extremely preoccupied with social media and, in particular how they look and feel to their friends. If the subject of art was raised on a social night out, many would perhaps snigger or mock the person discussing it.
The reality for young people today is that what they consume on a daily basis takes them far away from the arts. But could an event taking place very soon change all that?
For a minimal period of just two months The Harris Museum and Art Gallery in Preston city centre is staging some of the UK’s top up and coming artists and it’s hoped the event will initiate interest in the mind of a young person.
‘Graft’ will take place from Friday 5th April - Sunday 2nd June. An immersive show is planned with youngsters tiptoeing around the library and highlighting the different ways that artists create.
Cabinet member for leisure and culture at Preston City Council councillor Peter Kelly expressed these words about the key venue and the inspiring artists that have previously exhibited there,
“The Harris is recognised as a leading contemporary art gallery in the region. The young artists selected follow in the footsteps of Turner Prize winner Lubaina Himid and Martin Creed, whose artwork ‘Everything will be Alright’ blazed across the front of the building in 2016 to popular acclaim”.
Anyone visiting Graft will be able to claim a free limited edition zine created by Shy Bairns. A preview night runs on Thursday 4 April from 5.30pm to 8pm with live performances at 7.30pm and is free to attend.
Peter concludes with these words of great anticipation for the two month exhibition :-
“This time we are thrilled to have over 20 of the best young contemporary artists exhibit in the Harris. Expect something special.”
