72:18 - Preston Market Exhibition - The Harris - 13/10/18 - 25/11/18
Oct, 18 2018
~Prestonians have adjusted to the new indoor market now. Over the past six months or so there has been mixed response. Some feel it wasn’t needed whilst some welcomed the change of venue. Those that miss it may yearn for a snapshot, a collection of images as a souvenir of Preston’s long established former indoor market.
Photographer Joseph Gudgeon was fortunate to capture the final days of the market and the stallholders who took pride in their stall and the produce they sold.
Over a year of photographs epitomized the market transition which included the building and the traders some of which did not make it to the new development.
Now in a new exhibition entitled ‘72:18’, Joseph’s work is currently on display at The Harris Museum and Art Gallery. Joseph had the following to say about the pleasure photography brings him and how they can be appreciated by our children’s children,
“I like to capture the characters, the quirks and the architecture, which are woven into the very fabric of our wonderful city. Hopefully my photographs will be enjoyed by future generations.”
The new £4million structure replaced the previous Indoor Market which had traded since 1972 and is due to be demolished in early 2019.
Joseph’s exhibition can be viewed at The Harris now until Sunday 25th November 2018.
