1 Billion Rising 2018 - Solidarity - UCLAN - 14/ 2/18

Jan, 16 2018

~If someone came up to you in 2011 and told you  that in a years time they plan to hold a mass dance extravaganza that represents the uniqueness and solidarity of women who have come under sufferance from subjects such as racism, poverty and gender discrimination you would find it hard to believe. Interestingly however, that is exactly what has occurred.

One Billion Rising is the biggest mass action to end violence against women in human history. The campaign, launched on Valentine’s Day 2012, began as a call to action based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime.

Over the years since it’s inception it has grown to raise ongoing  awareness in respect of enduring trials women of all ages experience.

Now in 2018 the theme focuses on solidarity and from 14th February - 8th March local and international events are holding artistic demonstrations in the  form of  theatre, poetry, music, dance and film as radical calls to action in a bid to  escalate political consciousness.

If you are  interested in getting involved on a local level, UCLAN are staging a dance event on February 14th at the Sir Tom Finney Sports Centre from 11.30am - 12.50pm. It marks the 5th year the CCGUK have held the event in the North West. Come along  and dance for your sister, your mother, your grandmother, your girlfriend, your wife or your close friend. All welcome to do your part for 1 Billion Rising 2018.

Like in years before, the working class, grassroots, minority and marginalized women will continue to fiercely and dynamically lead the way – women who have been most affected by anti-women, anti-democratic and anti-people policies.

One Billion Rising shows us that women play a crucial role in creating solidarity movements as they lead from the forefront of local, national and international struggles. It shows us that women are continuing to organize everywhere, harnessing collective energy, building hope and solidarity, and using creativity and vision as they raise political consciousness in their unwavering and fierce determination towards a future of freedom, equality, respect and dignity.

This revolution demands vision, community, trust, commitment, courage, belief, hope and LOVE.
