What Is Ultimate Frisbee?

What Is Ultimate Frisbee?

Sep, 8 2016

So, CCG UK have their first sports club on board as part of their network and as much as we are delighted to hold that honour, we understand that it's a non-mainstream sport to say the least. This begs the question, what on earth is Ultimate Frisbee? What makes it Ultimate? Is it even a sport? Do we play with dogs? Hopefully I can answer a couple of questions on that.

As far as whether it's a sport or not, as of August last year it is now recognised as a sport (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-33752105). It's certainly a sport that has started to catch on here, in the UK, but up until recently the most common time to start playing is at University, where the majority of us at Prone started.

We play Indoors and Outdoors here. It's 5-a-side indoors and 7-a-side outdoors. Indoors are usually 17-23 minutes long and Outdoors are anything from 55 minutes to 80. To score a point, you have to catch the disc in an endone - a bit like American Football without the contact.

In fact, I have found a video which explains, in a light hearted way, exactly what Ultimate Frisbee is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9_MkS4z_6cg

If you can imagine that, but indoors, then you have Ultimate Frisbee. It's the fastest and most social sport in the country. The amount of people from the amount of different backgrounds is something that makes it so different from any other sport. The tournaments are over a weekend, there is usually a party and you play all over the UK - or Europe.

Those of us who started Prone have all played as students at UCLan, but before that, came from a large footballing background. We have jounralists, philosophers, teachers, mathematicians, social carers and musicians amongst a whole host of other backgrounds all playing in our team. You are more than welcome to check out the sport at one of our training sessions or even a tournament. Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you want to know of any other ways you can get involved!
