Creative Outlooks - The Rise and Fall of the SEGA Console
Mar, 21 2026
If you were a kid in the 80’s (or perhaps even Alex KID) you would have more than likely owned a SEGA console. These computers occupied the minds of young ones for hours yet as we see in the following video the console developed over a period of time and from what was once simple games evolved into more complex with key characters that took the brand into the 21st century –
It’s apparent that designers of SEGA found a lucrative opportunity and expanded the business but sadly as we saw in the film their concepts didn’t always become successful consoles. However, in hindsight the SEGA Genesis was one of their best consoles. Here are the top ten best SEGA Genesis games of all time –
- 10 – Ristar – Similar model to Sonic yet he has stretchy arms
- 9 – Mortal Kombat 2 – A gruesome fighting tournament
- 8 – Shining Force 2 – Tactical combat
- 7 – Sonic the Hedgehog 2 – Speedy platform game
- 6 – NHL ’94 – Hockey games
- 5- Contra – Hard Cops – Task force game
- 4- Streets of Rage 2 – One of the best beat –em-ups ever made
- 3 – Phantasy Star lV –The End of the Millenium – The Definitive JRPG on Sega Genesis
- 2- Gunstar Heroes – A landmark side – scroller from a new studio
- 1 – Sonic 3 & Knuckles – The ultimate and best game on the Sega Genesis
As featured in the film earlier, it was Sonic the Hedgehog that became the defining blueprint that made the Sega console so unique. Nintendo had Super Mario Bros and a worthy competitor was a blue high speed hedgehog that collected rings and battled with Dr. Robotnik.
Let’s remind ourselves why he was so compelling with the following intro to the games –
In recent years SEGA reached a milestone in 2020 with 60 years in business. The Game Gear Mirco microconsole was released to mark the occasion on October 6th 2020.
That same year it’s key character made the huge leap from the computer screen to the movie screen. There have now been three Sonic the Hedgehog films with the fourth due in 2027 and a spin off due in 2028. In addition, there have been three short films and even a very own television series launched in 2024 entitled, ‘Knuckles’.

SEGA was initially a successful concept, however as designers of the brand had their own ‘think tank’ they sabotaged a simple idea by becoming too complex and ultimately lost out. If they had just stuck with the same basic model it would have kept going and not failed. Yet they never lost their key character, the defining image that allowed them to rebrand and even now years after it’s first inception – Sonic the Hedgehog is more successful amongst kids today because it was launched into the movie theatre reaching a new audience and possibly introducing a fresh generation into the SEGA console.
