Creative Outlooks - The Books of Roald Dahl - A World of Pure Imagination

Feb, 21 2026

Roald Dahl was probably best known for his popular children’s literature and short stories. His work often contained unexpected endings featuring unsentimental, macabre, comic mood with villainous adult enemies of the child characters.

He had a designated spot for his creative writing where he championed kindhearted roles that featured an underlying warm sentiment.

Take a look at this interview and short film – Pebble Mill at One – 1982 -

His demise sadly took place on 23rd November 1990 at the age of 74 of a rare cancer of the blood, myelodysplastic syndrome in Oxford. He was buried with his snooker cues, some burgundy, chocolates, HB pencils and a power saw. Today, children continue to leave toys and flowers by his grave.

Yet almost 40 years later his books continue to fascinate and intrigue a child’s mind. They are full of mischief and wonder revealing a highly intellectual creative writer who was able to reach the heart of children by his imaginative storytelling.

Many of his books have been adapted to film these include –

  • Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971)
  • The BFG (1989)
  • Danny the Champion of the World (1989)
  • The Witches (1990)
  • Matilda (1996)
  • James and the Giant Peach (1996)
  • Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)
  • Revolting Rhymes (2016)

In 2016 development began on a film which would be an origin story and would work as a ‘companion piece’ to the film ‘Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory’ by reprising some of the music, thematic elements and visual design of the Oompa Loompas.

By May 2021, Timothy Chamlamet was confirmed to portray Wonka and the supporting cast was announced in September of that year. The film’s original songs were written by Neil Hannon of The Divine Comedy and its original score was composed by Joby Talbot.

‘Wonka’ was released towards the end of 2023 and acts as prequel to the 1971 classic. We see how Wonka becomes the principal chocolatier and the people he meets along his entrepreneurial journey as he rises and falls and rises again till he fulfils his wildest dreams.

This film is the closing scene in a magical movie –

Much like the original, the story was told by its clever imbedded songs in the soundtrack. Some sentimental, some jolly and full of wonder. This closing scene will initiate the beginning of the next film which is currently in development.

Over 4 decades Roald Dahl dedicated his life to writing as a novelist, poet and screenwriter. He was able to connect with children as every generation was introduced to his work through primary school education. He was able to create stories that only children would appreciate where they could be still as their dreams became a world of pure imagination.
