Dec, 21 2025
Prior to December 17th 1989 the thought of an animated sitcom that features a family highlighted in yellow designed to be the comedy factor that would reach homes on a global level and would sometimes pre-empt popular news stories before everyone seems like a ridiculous notion. But…..
Matt Groening was seriously onto something when he created – The Simpsons. The family is made up of doting father and husband – Homer, beehive hairdo wife and mother – Marge, juvenile youth and son – Bart, saxophone player, goodie two shoes and daughter – Lisa and the baby that never communicates – Maggie. All set in the fictional town of Springfield in an unspecified location in the United States. The sitcom caricatures society, Western culture, television and the human condition.
Let’s meet them all in the opening credits and theme song –
The Simpsons isn’t age specific meaning its audience are made up of adult and young people. This is because it goes beyond just a jolly animation. It touches on a variety of subjects such as –

- Educational systems and their shortcomings
- Environmental concerns and corporate responsibility
In addition there are some deep philosophical themes running throughout the storylines. These include –
- Existentialism and the search for meaning in life
- Ethics and moral decision-making
- Free will vs. determinism
- The nature of happiness and fulfillment
- Skepticism and critical thinking
Each character is a reflection of the people we may encounter in our everyday life. Well-meaning but flawed individuals, rebellious youths, intellectual and strong role models, patient and loving matriarchs.
