Liverpool. The birth place of the fab four and a series of other acts in the 1960’s.Fast forward twenty years later and The La’s were formed in 1983. La is scouse language for lad so the name simply means The Lads.

John Power was recruited as bass player in July 1986 and two years later their classic song ‘There she goes’ still gets frequent plays on the radio.

Power left the band in 1991 yet a reference in The La’s song ‘Looking Glass’ ends with the repeated line ‘The change is cast’. The latter word CAST became power’s next and most successful indie band.

Cast were immersed in the heady Britpop scene of the mid 90’s. Debut single ‘Finetime’ was a number 17 hit record in July 1995. In October of that year their first record was released, the John Leckie produced ‘All Change’. It reached number 7 in the UK, reaching double platinum and went on to become the fastest selling debut album in the history of the Polydor label, outselling the likes of The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Who and The Jam.

Walkaway, Alright and Sandstorm were also major hit singles. Take a look at the music video for the latter hit record –

The next 25 years the band experienced –

  • Further album releases
  • Split up
  • Power solo music
  • Reunion and new releases
  • Compilation best of
  • UK Tour 25th anniversary of All Change

On the 16th February 2024 Cast released their most recent album Love is the Call. Power described it as feeling like ‘a missing link’ between his time in The La’s and Cast’s debut album All Change.

Cast will be sharing the spotlight with another band from the Britpop era that have recently announced their comeback – the Manchester lads- Oasis. In a statement, Cast frontman John Power said –

"I’m blown away at the reunion. Oasis are the voice of a generation and the songs that they wrote and sung were and still are the soundtrack to many people’s dreams. They are the people’s band. I’ve known Noel and Liam all through the years, we go way back. It’s been some ride, some journey. I’ve felt and known their music personally, as a fan. It inspired me as songwriter, it blew the whole scene open like nothing before and it reached way beyond the stratosphere. Everything changed. We were all part of that and we will all be part of this. I’m especially looking forward to revisiting my family’s Irish roots when the tour hits Dublin. Let the opening chords shimmer and shine next July.”

Noel Gallagher shares the appreciation as he described Cast as like being a religious experience as labelled them ‘The Who of the 90’s”.

In the 1990s Cast were able to bring 60’s indie rock to the modern era. With their catchy tunes and lyrics that we all came to love. They were part of a movement and thankfully a new generation are finding the talent of the band once again.
