In his working life he was known as a manufacturer, politician and philanthropist. Born in Bradford, Sir Titus Salt created something of an empire during his entrepreneurial years.

136 years after his death the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics featured a segment of the industrial revolution. Directed by Academy Award winning British film director Danny Boyle ‘Isles of Wonder’ chronicled Britain through the years. An artistic display of the era in which Salt worked his magic on his employees proved to be a work of brilliance which captured this period in British history to the letter, in fact it was deemed a ‘masterpiece’ and ‘a love letter to Britain’ twelve years ago.

 Salt was also a highly favoured man, his philanthropic efforts were seen in his gifts which came to a total value of approximately £139,000. In 1867, he also contributed a large sum to the first Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). The boat was affectionately names Saltaire and served from 1867 – 1891.

Salt’s legacy remains intact and those with an entrepreneurial outlook can be inspired by his incredible work ethic. The very fact that street names are named after his children demonstrates what a powerful impact he had on those in his local community and his determination to be a success, no matter what.
