With the recent unveiling of the Wallace and Gromit bench in Preston city centre it’s seem appropriate to highlight a unique underground wine and cheese bar that would certainly go down well with our comic heroes.

Hidden in a cellar under Lancaster Road, ‘Wine Down’ offers more than 300 wines and 200 grape varieties. These include organic, biodynamic and orange wines.

The venue has had a colourful history ranging from a saddlery, a printing press, the bus drivers’ canteen and most recently it welcomed diners to the Duk Tapas and Piccolino restaurants.

On entering you’ll experience a wide range of drinks from sherries and ports to brandies and liqueurs. The deli counter provides an excellent range of food. These include:-
  • Local, British  continental cheeses and charcuterie
  • Pork pies
  • Hummus
  • Olives
  • Homemade chutneys
The attention to detail given to the food and drink served, combined with the atmosphere of the cellar, has won the hearts of customers time and time again.

Here are a couple of quotes from some well received customers:-

"You'll go down stairs and find a unique, cosy, intimate place full of wonderful art work, collectables, a crazy amount of wine and a selection of weird and wonderful cheese - local and from overseas."

"So many wines can be a bit overwhelming, but friendly staff are happy to advise. Great selection of cheese. Knowledgeable and helpful staff. During lockdown I ordered a delivery which was wonderful. Can't wait to go back!"
