Lovely Place To Walk Your Dogs

Lovely Place To Walk Your Dogs

Aug, 2 2021

The recent heat wave may have been too much for us humans, but spare a thought for our four legged friends. Yes, dogs will have found it increasingly tough to tolerate the hot weather but there is an ideal location in East Lancashire that a dog owner has been able to enjoy.

Keely Reeves from Rossendale has been walking her two Dalmations across the stunning route every morning.

It’s a 5am start for Keely as she explains the reason for getting them out so early,

“It’s the only way I can get my dogs out in this heat. Being working dogs they like their exercise, but we have to think about the coolest part of  the day for them. Dogs like to please their owners but they overheat a lot quicker than humans. Paths get hot and can burn their pads. But once we get out of the door, it’s peaceful with just the sounds of nature - it makes it all worthwhile”.

Both dogs are still young at just five years old. Oddie was a “free to a good home” dog and Buddy is an abused rescue. Although of the same breed they are different dogs yet they share a love of walking the hills and moors in East Lancashire.

As active dogs they really like to run and have even competed in numerous half marathons with Kelly and her husband, who are regular runners. Kelly reveals the contrast  of activity in both dogs,

“Oddie is a steam train. He loves a fast paced 5km as well as distance running. He was born to run and sulks behind the door if you don’t take him. Buddy likes running, but he just likes plodding along at your pace. But if you run them together you get a good pull and they work together.”

There is nothing quite like having dogs to motivate you to rise early in the morning as you catch the sunrise and watch in wonder as your treasured pet paddles in the river to cool off with nobody else in sight.

Kelly concludes with these positive words our pet can do on our health,

“Dogs do us the world of good especially during the pandemic. They are great for your mental health and make you get out even if you can’t be bothered”.
