Preston musician creates music for the times we're living in

If you’re a creative person you would have found the events that took place last year as the perfect way to express yourself in the form of song writing.

Popular mainstream musicians have already  produced music which has reflected the times we’re living in but what about closer to home in the north west. Surely there are some local people who have rediscovered themselves in music throughout all the drama of the pandemic.

Ashton on Ribble musician Van Mike has released his debut single inspired by lockdown in the city of Preston.

“Streets” highlights the importance of appreciating what we have.

Van explains how the song came about and that we should never take anything for granted,

“The song was born out of the ruminations that occurred during all the lockdown about how important the little things are that we take for granted so often. I’ve been guilty of complaining that ‘there is nothing to do’ in this city. It’s only when all your privileges have been removed from your control that you truly realise how much you do/did have going for you in any one moment. If you walk around blinded to everything , you’ll never see the opportunities that arise”.

Music and the arts has played a major role in Van’s life. His record collection dates back to the 50s, 60s and 70s and he feels an immediate connection with other musicians and the stories they have that first got them into the music business.

He admits to previous decades in music that captured a unique time in history,

“I appreciate the music as almost a time capsule that allows me to envision what life was like when iconic songs were released. They are a by- product of their surroundings and the inspiration for any piece of art can come from somewhere you would not have otherwise expected”.

Streets is available to purchase from your local record store.
