The Harris Reopening Today - April 12th 2021

Pop duo Everything but the Girl once sang about the following absence, ‘And I miss you like the deserts missed their rain.’ The same feeling rings true for many people over the last four months. We’ve missed so much because of the most recent lockdown but from this week places across the UK are opening up once again.
The Harris Museum and Art Gallery is a well known landmark for the people of Preston. Today it is welcoming visitors back to it’s ground floor spaces and public spaces much to the delight of the local community.
Special offers will be a pleasant way to invite people back into the building. Visitors will be able to browse the library to pick up new books, return winter reads and collect reserved items from the desk.
This leads to the excellent new initiative ‘Book of the Month’. Staff will recommend books to help library users make their selection. April will see ‘The Book Shop’ by Penelope Fitzgerald.
The popular book selection scheme ‘Six of the Best’ will continue for those in a hurry or still a little apprehensive about attending in person. To book a public computer slot please visit the following website address:-
Here are some additional offers you can enjoy:-
- The Harris shop will have a 50% off gifts in a Welcome Back offer
- The Artists Commission line will offer specially commissioned pieces from local artists.
- The Harris café will offer a range of takeaway cakes and coffees. Till the end of April customers can purchase a hot drink with a free slice of cake as a Welcome Back treat.
- Customers can choose a picnic style lunch with a selection of items which include freshly made sandwiches and a choice of drinks, for a special price of £4.50.
Neil Fairhurst, Deputy Chief Executive for Resources, gives these positive words of reassurance as we move forward out of lockdown,
“For Harris staff and visitors we know it has been a long winter in which we had to temporarily close due to the pandemic. With spring comes renewed optimism, especially now that we’ve received the fantastic news that the Harris £10m Harris Your Place project is going ahead. We are looking forward to a better future, welcoming people back on 12th April, and to the wider museum and art galleries on 17th May, subject to the Government roadmap”.
Visitors are invited to simply call in and see the building’s beautiful spaces from the ground floor. There is a new artwork that has been specially installed for the reopening.
